I. Inception & Journey
Spring Creek Urology is a physician-owned lab that performs at least 900 molecular testing samples a month for three or four doctors. Its specialization involves a wide range of urological tests for men and women. Further, aiming to expand to the sexually transmitted infections testing niche.
II. Roadblocks They Faced Since Inception
Dr. Daniel Sappington shared that Spring Creek Urology Lab has utilized conventional and paper-based methods in its lab operations since its inception. Despite handling higher sample volumes, paper-based requisition forms and reports were created and managed in Excel macros.
On the other hand, UTI testing was performed using the PCR technique. This was again a manual process as they didn’t have a LIMS. This unsophisticated and erroneous approach to lab management, coupled with the constant pressure of maintaining the TAT, hampered work efficiency and affected lab service quality.
As Dr. Sappington was well-versed in using LIS at other labs he had worked with; he convinced Spring Creek Lab to purchase a LIMS to streamline operations and improve lab quality.
